The Paragon Café in Katoomba - Talk by Ian Jack

Thursday 25 July 2013
Talk by Ian Jack
The Paragon Café in Katoomba: its social, aesthetic and industrial heritage

Greek cafes of the 1920s and 1930s have a special place in Australian social history and occupy a distinctive heritage niche. The Paragon in Katoomba is the apotheosis of the Greek cafe, still flourishing after ninety years, still renowned for its chocolates and its ambience.  But there is more to the Paragon than most people have seen: two spectacular function rooms behind the public cafe and the industrial zone upstairs, with its bakery, chocolaterie, dumb waiter and original equipment.

Ian Jack has been interested in the Paragon since he supervised the heritage assessment twelve years ago and is strongly supportive of the efforts of the present tenant, Robyn Parker, to conserve its heritage values.  Ian has retired from the Department of History at the University of Sydney and is a past President of both ASHET and the Royal Australian Historical Society.

Venue: History House, 133 Macquarie Street, Sydney
Time: 5.30 for 6 pm
Cost; Includes light refreshments on arrival; RAHS and ASHET members $10, others $12
Bookings: phone RAHS on (02) 9247 8001 or email history@rahs.org.au

"BUSHRANGING IN THE CENTRAL WEST"

SATURDAY COMMUNITY MEETING 27th April 2013
The guest speaker
 Mr. Colin Moss
Colin is a well known for his expert knowledge of our local bushrangers. Among his long time interest about local bushrangers he has with the Lachlan Living History Group created re-enactments in full 1860 costume at Orange, Carcoar, Grenfell, Eugowra, Forbes, Wellington, Young and Cowra,
In these re-enactments, Colin has played the part of a bushranger and now prefers to be a police trooper.

Colin has travelled extensively and has devoted a lot of his time to researching the bushranger history and taken many photos of historical locations.
Colin will be enchanting the group with Local bushranger stories on the 27thof April at the West Wing of the Orange Art Gallery at 10-30 am. Tea and biscuits are available from 10 am.
We also hope to have a copy of the plans for the new Regional museum available then.
Looking forward to your support on the 27th April Elaine Kaldy (Vice President of ORMAA)

Evening Lecture: Restoring a Historic Mural at Rylstone   hotel rylstone

The Bridge View Inn in Rylstone in mid-West NSW contains a rare mural painted in the late 19th Century by an unknown artist, depicting the second Rylstone bridge, elaborately framed by decoration and nudes. The mural is in an extremely unstable condition, and painting conservators Matteo Volonte and Adam Godijn from International Conservation Services recently travelled to Rylstone to commence stabilisation and remove the layers of overpaint that had been discovered to be covering the top third of the image. The journey to Rylstone turned into one of discovery in many different ways.

Adam Godijn graduated in 2000 as a paintings conservator and has led an exciting career in Australia and abroad. Adam is based in Sydney with International Conservation Services as a Senior Paintings Conservator and has worked on many of the most important private and public collections.

Virginia Hollister moved to Rylstone in 2004 after a career working as a lecturer at Sydney College of the Arts, then arts administrator for the Australia Council and the NSW Ministry for the Arts, then freelance arts and museum researcher and writer. In Rylstone she is deeply involved with the Rylstone and District Historical Society, who own and manage the Bridge View Inn.

A joint activity of ASHET and the RAHS

Venue: History House, 133 Macquarie Street, Sydney
