Meaning and significance
Recently Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest completed the significance assessment of their collection, following the receipt of a $4,000 Community Heritage Grant (CHG) last year.
If you’ve been to the Lewers Gallery site, you’ll know that the Lewers’ family home, its place beside the Nepean River, the sculptures and garden are all part of the fabulous package offered by the Regional Gallery, and an important piece of Australia’s mid-century modern art and design heritage.
The Gallery houses an extensive collection of modern art, some of it made by Margo and Gerald Lewers themselves, some of it collected by them. It holds significant examples of Australian Modernism in particular Abstraction, Constructivism and Minimalism. More recently the collection has been expanded to include contemporary works, with examples from Islander, Aboriginal and Western-Sydney artists such as Greg Semu, Brook Andrew and Justine Williams, as well as work generated through the gallery residency program
Statements of Significance determine the financial, social, cultural value and importance of an item or collection.
Dr Sally Watterson, an independent consultant, was engaged to evaluate the cultural significance of the Gallery and its permanent collection. Waterson’s role was to coordinate and manage the application of Significance 2.0, the federal policy document used to determine the importance of our cultural collections. Determining the significance of a cultural object—be it a single work of art, a historic building, or an entire collection—demands detailed investigation into the provenance—or chain of ownership—as well as considerable historical research into how one work of art interrelates with another and with other collections.
Statements of Significance determine the financial, social, cultural value and importance of an item or collection. Each statement presents an argument about how and why an object is important and underpins the policies around that object, prioritising them in terms of resources for curatorial, conservation, exhibition, research and access programs.
As part of the project, Collection Manager Dr Shirley Daborn attended an intensive preservation and collection management workshop held in Canberra. “While the CHG provides the funds, the workshop offers the expertise to help us protect the collection, while also assisting us with our ambition to increase our engagement with scholars, students and the general public interested in researching this fascinating period in history,” Daborn said.
Ms Anne-Marie Schwirtlich, Director-General of the National Library of Australia, a strong advocate of the CHG program, said: “It is all about working together to help spread the message that if we don’t preserve our history now, it could be lost forever. Through sharing this knowledge, the information can be taken back to the communities where it is most needed to ensure that local heritage collections are still there for future generations.”
Gallery Director, Dr Lee-Anne Hall said the significance assessment process was a crucial step in fully honouring the history of the Gallery as a centre of artist activity in the mid-century period. So now when you drop into the fabulous gallery by the river, you’ll know you are looking at a collection with real significance.

Regional Services Stakeholders Day - Powerhouse Museum
Regional Services Stakeholders Day
On Thursday 7 November the Powerhouse Museum is holding the annual Regional Stakeholder Forum. The program will feature three panel sessions – which will focus on partnerships and processes for developing regional travelling exhibitions, programming for the Centenary of World War I, and ‘hot topics’ – an open session for issues and concerns to come from the floor. This is an opportunity to talk with representatives from the State Cultural Institutions and service agencies about issues and programs for 2014.
This is a free event but bookings are essential and places are limited.
RSVP by 4 November please.
There is financial assistance available from the Powerhouse Regional Services to support the travel and accommodation costs for regional staff or volunteers. This must be applied for and approved prior to the day.

Ben Hall Raid Weekend Festival - August 2013 Newsletter

The Ben Hall Raid took place at Bathurst on
Saturday 3rd October, 1863, and the Ben Hall Raid
Weekend Festival will mark the 150th Anniversary
of the event. This is the sixth in the series of these e-
newsletters to be emailed to anyone interested. If
you would like earlier issues, just ask.
The Ben Hall Raid Weekend Festival Committee of the Bathurst District Historical Society has been meeting for almost fourteen months to bring plans together for this event. The next issue will contain an updated program for the three days.
We are most grateful to Sergeant Kylie Riddell, the Mounted Police Event Co-ordinator, for making the arrangements for the Mounted Police to visit Bathurst to take part in the weekend events.
A number of bushranger, colonial and historic displays will be on show on the Saturday as well as talks, numerous bus tours, a dinner and a number of activities that will take place during the three days. The re-enactment is on schedule. The countdown is now on with about 9 weeks before visitors start arriving in Bathurst for the weekend.

Kandos Museum - $12,000 grant

The Kandos Museum received a $12,000 Aboriginal Heritage Grant last week that will enable them to develop a Dabee Travelling Cultural History Exhibition in partnership with the Aboriginal people of Kandos.
"The grant will help us with site identification, the building of the travelling exhibit on the Dabee people and the creation of a small introductory exhibition at the Kandos Museum,” Colin Jones, Curator at the Kandos Museum said.
"The project is about recognising family ancestors of the Dabee people. The exhibition itself will identify individual North-Eastern Wiradjuri people and their ancestors that contributed to the creation on Kandos and the culture in the region today," Mr Jones said.
Lyn Syme, Native Title Cultural Heritage Officer at Moolarben Coal, was instrumental in getting the exhibition off the ground. Ms Syme put forward the initial $12,000 and it was with that money the Kandos Museum was able to apply for the "dollar-for-dollar" Aboriginal Heritage Grant.
The exhibition will travel around to schools, other museums and cultural centres in order to educate people on the historic significance of the Dabee people in the local area.
"In the local area, people are under the assumption that there are not any Dabee people left anymore. This exhibition will help show them that this assumption is not at all true,” Ms Syme said.
The exhibition will include photographs, stories and artefacts and will also include information about the descendants of these Dabee ancestors who were a large part of the Kandos area. Member for Orange Andrew Gee said the grant was one of nine Aboriginal Heritage Grants that were announced by the Minister for Environment, Robyn Parker.
"I am sure the proposed project will provide a valuable history of the Wiradjuii and Dabee people in the region," he said.
The grant is part of the NSW Heritage Grants program that provides grants to help bring state and local heritage buildings and places back to life, fund emergency repairs and care for Aboriginal places.

Significance Statement Writing Workshop - Kandos Museum
Significance 2.0: a guide to assessing the significance of collections builds on the solid foundation laid by the first edition of Significance (2001) in defining an adaptable method for determining significance across all collections in Australia. Those who have been guided by this ‘significance method’ since 2001 report that this has translated into better decision-making about their collections in areas like preservation, physical and digital access, and funding support.

Ben Hall Weekend Festival June 2013 Newsletter

It is very pleasing to see the list increase with those collectors and historians who will be displaying their collections, or parts thereof, on the Saturday afternoon 28th September in Russell Street in front of the Bathurst Court House. There will be items never displayed before and other items rarely seen outside museums. These displays will be very educational and younger children and students are encouraged to come along with their parents or grandparents.
The New South Wales Mounted Police will be in attendance over the weekend and will be taking part in the re-enactment of the Ben Hall raid on Bathurst.
This is the fourth in the series of e-newsletters with five more to go and by all indications many people are enjoying them.

The bygone era of steam trains
ORANGE REGIONAL MUSEUM ADVANCEMENT ASSOCIATION INC.
Saturday 1st June at 1 pm in the West Room of the Orange Library/Gallery complex
An open invitation to all interested people with a love and fascination for the bygone era of steam trains to attend a presentation by a well known train archivist and photographer John Ward.
John, a Sydney based steam rail photographer and now Archivist with the Australian Railway Historical Society, is to be a guest of O.R.M.M.A. for his presentation. He will show a part of his collection and tell many of the stories associated with the photographic memorabilia.
John is very concerned, and will talk about the importance of preserving and documenting any photographs, and other memorabilia people may have. As a volunteer to the A.R.H.S.he has great concerns about beautiful photographs that have been donated but have no documentation attached rendering them useless for preserving and archiving. He will show and also talk about how all forms of film can be kept of the future.
Some of John's train and tram friends are also coming to Orange for the day.
Please join us for a most interesting presentation. Entry is a small donation at the door.

Ben Hall Weekend Festival May 2013 Newsletter

Welcome to the third in the series of e-newsletters for the Ben Hall Raid Weekend Festival. It continues to be received with great interest. The raid by the Hall gang was extensively covered in the early newspapers right across Australia, including as far away as Western Australia. It even made the papers in Great Britain.

We have been informed that the Bathurst Court House will be open for tours as well as housing some of the historic displays on the Saturday afternoon. This historic building, situated in Russell Street opposite Kings Parade, was constructed in a neoclassical style which features Greek revival and Renaissance elements by a local builder David Jones. The building, which cost ₤47,000, was opened on the 16th July, 1880, by the Hon Francis Bligh Suttor, Minister for Justice and from the well known local Suttor family of ‘Brucedale’.
