Online Databases

Online databases are a great way for Historical Societies to promote both their collections and their organisation. 

Including records in a online database allows researchers to know about the range of items held by your organisation as well as specific items that may be useful for their research. In some cases the use of an online database may be the first time researchers become aware of the existence of your organisation. Researchers can then contact you for information on viewing or obtaining copies of items.

Participation in an online cataloguing project encourages standardisation of cataloguing in the use of fields required to adequately catalogue items. Using a thesaurus when selecting subjects makes it easier for researchers to locate items on a specific topic. One such online thesaurus is the Australian Pictorial Thesaurus.

About the Strategy

In 2010 the Australian Government decided to develop the Australian Heritage Strategy. The aim of the Strategy will be to highlight the importance of heritage to all Australians and provide a common direction for the recognition, protection, commemoration and celebration of heritage across Australia over the next decade.

The Strategy will seek to coordinate the significant efforts of government and the private sector in order to build upon achievements over the past few decades.

The Strategy is being prepared in consultation with all state and territory governments, and key stakeholder groups and has the support of the Australian Heritage Council, the Heritage Chairs and Officials of Australia and New Zealand and the Australian Council of National Trusts.

Public consultation paper

A public consultation paper has now been released which outlines some of the current challenges and opportunities in the heritage sector. Public comment is invited from the community on how we can best recognise, manage, and interpret our heritage. Comments received will help guide the development of the Australian Heritage Strategy.

Submissions will be accepted up until 15 June 2012.

Arts NSW 2012 Arts Funding Program

Guidelines for the 2013 Arts Funding Program (AFP) can be downloaded from the Arts NSW website.
 
Application forms will be progressively released on the Arts NSW online application system. You will be required to create a user account and (once you’ve received a verification email) login to submit an application.  Information on using the online application form is available from the FAQs page of the Arts NSW website.

Free information sessions
Arts NSW have planned a series of free information sessions on the 2013 Arts Funding Program throughout May.
 
Sessions will cover:

RAHS History and Heritage Grant Applications Now Open

The Royal Australian Historical Society (RAHS) is pleased to announce the opening of the 2012 round of Cultural Grants and Heritage Grants, which this year offers increased funding to a larger range of community projects. Grants may range in size from $500 to over $5000.

The RAHS’s President, Emeritus Professor David Carment said, “While grants may be small, their value to the community is enormous. They seed new ideas and acknowledge the unflagging work of the history community. The increased funding secured this year is a testament to the value of the work of the history and heritage sector.”

Cultural Grants support organisations undertaking projects with a lasting historical contribution to a community in NSW. Funding for these grants is triennial and has doubled this year to $45,000. Funding is provided by the NSW Government through Arts NSW.

Heritage Grants support individuals and non-governmental organisations undertaking a project related to NSW heritage and history. Priority will be given to projects that present popular Australian local histories that appeal to a wide audience and are suitable for publication, focussed on World War One, migration to Australia, or exploring the diversity of 20th Century Australian culture. The Heritage Council NSW funds Heritage Grants.

Threads

They wore what?! Long before the fashionistas of today decided 'the look', dress was an important element of human expression. From status to style, culture to professional identity, clothes have defined us. History Week 2012 will explore the history of threads and unpick the meaning behind the wardrobes of the past.

How to take part
In 2012 there are three ways you can be involved in History Week.

1. Host an Event
As always we will be inviting members to put on events during History Week that explore our theme. This could be a talk, tour, exhibition or even web based application- we're open to ideas! For your event to be eligible it will need to have a history focus, explore our theme and take place during History Week 8-16 September 2012. For more information visit our website. 

2. Receive a Speaker
In 2012 the History Council of NSW is able to fund speakers to travel local and regional organisations thanks to a grant from the Copyright Agency Limited. The talks will be filmed and published on our website - a great way to promote your organisation! For more information on the Speaker Connect program, presented in partnership with the RAHS, visit our website.

3. Register as a Speaker
Are you a professional historian who can speak to the theme of Threads?
Register as a speaker for History Week 2012 and we will cover your costs and pay you to travel to a regional or local organisation. A video of the talk will then be published on our website- a great way to raise your profile and reach new audiences!!
