Memory and remembering Dr. Janis Wilton 

At the core of oral history interviews are the memories people are willing to share. In family history, these include memories of events, people and places relating to the family as well as the experiences that shape an individual’s life story. What is the nature of these family memories? What influences them? How are they reconstructed? What and why do people remember and not remember? How do we, as oral history interviewers, tap into these memories to create interviews that are rich in descriptions and insights? Dr. Janis Wilton is an award winning public and oral historian based at the University of New England. 

Also meet three oral historians Di Ritch, Michael Clarke and Laurel Wraight who will speak about their experiences with family history projects followed by a general discussion moderated by Janis Wilton.

Rylstone's Bridge View Inn Painted Mural

As an event for Heritage Week 2012, the Rylstone and District Historical Society is having an open day for the public to see the progress of the work to clean and stabilise the mural. Some new parts have been exposed.

Digitising Collections

With accessible, affordable equipment and the integration of the web into everyday life there is an increasing demand to digitise collections, but how do we keep these resource hungry projects from becoming white elephants?

This one day event will provide participants with the information and skills to make better decisions about digitisation projects and the management of digital material in museums and galleries. A series of panel discussions will address issues including:

     ° Planning digitisation projects
 
     ° Managing copyright, ethical and artists rights issues in a digital environment

     ° Current and future uses of digital material that may impact on digitisation projects
 
Hands on workshops will be held in the afternoon at the Powerhouse Museum, Art Gallery of NSW and State Library of NSW focusing on the digitisation of specific material including artworks, three dimensional objects, glass plate negatives, maps and other large format documents.

Digitising Collections is an M&G NSW event in partnership with the Powerhouse Museum, in conjunction with Art Gallery NSW and State Library of NSW.
